Detroit, MICHIGAN

FRAMEWORK

Located directly across from Belle Isle, Islandview is one of Detroit oldest neighborhoods with the historic district of East Grand Boulevard running through it. Islandview is full of grassroots organizations working directly with Islandview residents to uplift and support the dreams and needs of the community. These organizations have developed affordable housing, created programs to support Islandview entrepreneurs and programs to encourage healthy living habits. In addition, Islandview’s community organizations are focused on utilizing the talent within the community as the framework and approach to their programs and services offered. Islandview community organizations are invested in Belle Isle and attracting visitors from the Belle Isle into the Islandview community.

DESIGN APPROACH

The proposed Framework Plan for Islandview is centered around the following Public Interest Design Approaches: (1) Participatory Action Research and Practice which focuses on the exchange of knowledge between residents as the experts; (2) Advocacy Design to develop strategies that advocate to address resident desires; and (3) Design as Activism through forming partnerships with local activist groups to ensure our designs are not working against but toward resident objectives. One major theme from community organizations is the empower Islandview residents. Therefore, the key goals proposed are promoting economic gardening that will provide accessibility to amenities and increase opportunities for third places and to encourage the growth of equitable housing through cooperative ownerships. By implementing these key goals, Islandview would welcome visitors and new Islandview residents to the community to support Islandview business owners and entrepreneurs. An internal progression that residents can participate and benefit while limited the changes of residents being pushed out of and/or displaced.
